One of the original settlers of Warwick, Rhode Island. Forced toleavefor
for not joining the authorities against the Quakers and others.
General History on Early Quakers in America:
Friends made a most profound affect on the course of Americanhistory. The first Quaker missionaries arrived on America's shores in1656, onehundred and twenty years before the signing of theDeclaration ofIndependence. Mary Fisher and Ann Austin landed atBoston where thePuritan authorities had them seized and kept underclose guard. Ahundred of their books were burned in the marketplaceand they weredispatched to Barbados on the next departing ship. Theirbedding andeven their Bibles were confiscated to pay the jailer's fee.ThePilgrim Fathers wanted religious freedom for themselves but offereditto no one else.
Friends were welcomed in Rhode Island which was founded as a havenfromthe intolerance of Puritan Massachusetts. So overwhelming wastheresponse there that at one time half of the population wereFriends, and the colony elected Quaker governors for thirty-sixconsecutiveterms--more than a century. Friends were also well receivedinMaryland. Lord Baltimore established the colony as a refugeforpersecuted English Catholics and was willing to give libertyofconscience to others in religious matters. Spokespersons fortheQuaker faith made some deep inroads into Virginia as well.
In 1657, a boatload of Quaker missionaries from England landed onLongIsland. One of them, Robert Hodgson, drew large crowds tohismeetings. He was arrested, imprisoned, flogged and treatedveryseverely. At last some of the Dutch colonists interceded on hisbehalfand secured his unconditional release. Many continued to respondtothe Friends message in spite of a firm edict issued against itbyGovernor Peter Stuyvesant. Finally on December 27, 1657, thecitizensof Flushing drew up a magnificently worded protest remindingtheirGovernor that their charter allowed them "to have and enjoyLiberty ofConscience according to the Custome and manner of Holland, withoutmolestation or disturbance." This came to be known as theFlushingRemonstrance. It was the first time that a group of settlersin theNew World petitioned the government for religious freedom. Itwascommemorated in a United States postage stamp issued threehundredyears later.
Meanwhile the persecution of Friends in Puritan Massachusetts grewmoreintense. Friends were lashed behind carts and whipped from towntotown. They were branded with a "H" for heretic; they had theirtonguesbored through with a hot iron; their ears were cut off; theywerebanished. Finally Governor John Endicott succeeded in having thedeathpenalty invoked for any Friends who returned to the colony afterbeingbanished beyond its borders. Four Quakers were hanged onBostonCommon--William Robinson, Marmaduke Stephenson, William LeddraandMary Dyer. She was the first woman to suffer death on these shoresforher religious convictions. Today a statue of her stands onBostonCommon, a reminder to all that our religious freedom was boughtat aprecious price.
In 1671, George Fox along with twelve others came to Americaandtrekked up and down the Atlantic Seaboard. In 1672, he and aWilliamEdmondson, who had already preached successfully in Ireland, becamethe first preachers who ever held any kind of Christian worshipwithinthe borders of the Carolinas. Later, John Archdale would becometheQuaker Governor of the Carolinas and one-half of therepresentativesof the legislature were Friends.
The outbreak of persecution of Friends back in England againledseventeen Quakers to purchase East Jersey to serve as a refugewhereFriends could practice their faith without interference.RobertBarclay, the brilliant young Scottish Quaker theologian, servedasGovernor of the colony for a time.
Then, in 1681, William Penn accepted the grant of land whichbecamePennsylvania as the payment of a debt which King Charles II owedhisfather. The Duke of York, who later became King James II, threw intheterritory of Delaware in on the deal. Penn landed in his colony onthegood ship "Welcome" in 1682. He met with the Indians under thegreatelm at Shackamason, the ancient meeting place of the tribes andmadefriends with them. He purchased land from them at a fair priceandconcluded a treaty with them that was agreeable to all. Acenturylater the humanistic French philosopher, Voltaire, wouldobserve thathis was the only treaty ever made between white men andthe Indiansthat was never sworn to and never broken.
In his carefully worded Frame of Government for Pennsylvania Penngavethe citizens both liberty and responsibility. He designed agovernmentdedicated to religious freedom, to equality and peace. Helaid outPhiladelphia as the first planned city in the New World.Pennsylvaniawas Penn's "Holy Experiment," his attempt to apply theChristianprinciples held by Friends to the practical business ofgovernment. The guidelines of the Frame of Government gave the citizensthefreedom to develop to the fullest of their potential and they andthecolony prospered. For decades Pennsylvania stood as a model totheworld of democracy, liberty and harmony.

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]
William Lived in Bengeworth, Engl at least until Dec 1637 when hisdau. Martha
(which was the second daughter by this name) was born. She wasBaptized at St.
Peter's in Bengeworth. He then probably moved to London for a while
before emmigrating as he did own property in London at the time of hisdeath.
He was an inhabitant of Hempstead, Long Island, NY in 1654. He was adeputy of
the town of Hempstead with John Seaman in 1653. In Hempstead, William
Washburn is listed as the owner of nine and a half (?) Milk Cows. Itseems he
was only part owner of one of the cows.
William Washburn's will was dated 29 Sep 1657 and it was probated onJune 5,
1659. (Copy in Washburn Family Foundations... pages 95-97.)
William was an Elder of the original Board of Elders of the old "FirstChurch"
of Hempstead, NY.
William came to the United Colonies in the company of Mr. Leverich, first
minister at Sandwich on Cape Cod, not far from Duxbury, Mass. It isrecorded
that William Washburn, together with Mr. Leverich and others, purchased land at
Oyster Bay in 1653. (the other purchasers were Thomas Armitage, DanWhitehead,
Anth. Wright, Rob. Williams, Joh. Washbourne and Ric. Holbrooke.) DanWhitehead
was the brother-in-law of William Washburn. John Washburn mentionedhere is the
son of William.
William was in Hempstead as early as 1647.
The court record in Ft Amsterdam in New Netherland the 18 of Oct 1646would indicate that William had been in America for some time. Williamwas a patentee of Hempstead in 1647, and one of the joint purchasers(as was also his son John), of Oyster Bay, Long Island, in 1653.
Although actual documentary proof is lacking, there is very strongcircumstantial evidence that he is the younger son of John Washbourneand brother of John, born 1597. "Washbourne Family of LittleWashbourne and Wichenford" by James Davenport for this evidence, principally based on similarity of Christian names of parents andchildren, juxtaposition of dates, and the fact that there is nofurther record of this William Washbourne in England after 1637.
From Genforum:
The tie from William WASHBURN of Hempstead to the William WASHBORNEbaptized in Bengeworth, Worcester Co., England on 9 Nov. 1601 is a bitmore complicated, but the strongest proof lies in the connections withthe Francis NICHOLS family. William WASHBORNE married Jane NICHOLS,daughter of Francis NICHOLS, of Sedgeberrow, Worcester Co., England, which is only a few miles south of the parish of Evesham, in about1625. Bengeworth is part of the parish of Evesham, which was theprimary city in that part of Worcester County at the time. Themarriage record has not survived, but a few of the baptisms ofchildren of William WASHBORNE have survived in the Bishop'sTranscripts for Bengeworth, and they match known children to Williamand Jane WASHBURN in Hempstead, Long Island. Furthermore, in the willof John WASHBURN, of Hempstead, son of William and Jane WASHBURN, whodied in 1658, he mentioned his "loving uncle, Isac Nichols ofStraatford, New England," who was a brother of his mother, Jane(NICHOLS) WASHBURN. Both Francis NICHOLS and his son Isaac NICHOLSlived in Stratford, CT, which is also where William and Jane WASHBURNsettled first, before moving to Hempstead. Francis NICHOLS ofSedgeberrow, Worcester, married Frances WIMARKE in Sedgeberrow on 24Jan. 1599/1600, and baptismal records are found in Sedgeberrow for thechildren of Francis NICHOLS who later show up in Connecticut: JohnNICHOLS, Jane (NICHOLS) WASHBURN, Sarah (NICHOLS) MILLS, and IsaacNICHOLS. Most probably William and Jane WASHBURN migrated from Englandto Connecticut Colony with the family of Jane's father, FrancisNICHOLS, in about 1639. The last record of William WASHBURN inBengeworth is the 18 Dec. 1637 baptism of his daughter Martha WASHBURNthere.
Lastly, we know that the William WASHBORNE baptized in 1601 inBengeworth did not die young because he was named in the 1614 will ofhis uncle and godfather, Edward TIMBRELL, the 1624 will of his father,John WASHBORNE, and the 1625 will of his mother, Martha (TIMBRELL)(STEVENS) WASHBORNE.
So that ties William WASHBORNE of Bengeworth, Worcester Co., England, with William WASHBURN of Stratford, CT, and Hempstead, Long Island.
The will of William was in the office of the Town Clerk of NorthHempstead, LI in 1953.

General Notes: [Master File.ftw]
There is some question as to the surname of Jane, William's wife. Themost possible name is Nichols for both son, John, and grandson, John, make reference in a will and legal records to their Uncle IsaacNichols of Stratford, CT. As there seems to be some litigation overWm. Washburn's will, it is possible that son John was the son of aprevious wife to Jane. The other name commonly proposed for Jane isWhitehead, but I have seen no proof of that. " OUR WASHBURN HERITAGE,By Elain Washburn Olney, P 2.

From "Drake in England" p. 88: "William Drake was presented fordefault of residence on 6 April 1592 and fined on inhabited houses inthe manor Court of Abell in Halstead 30 December 1600. Earlier on 1February 1579, he was named as witness to the apprenticeship of tobiasson of Richard Ebbes of Sandy in Befordshire a woollen draper, toThomas Wilkinson, linen draper.
Although traces of Puritan influence can be seen in the introductionof Old Testament names for children in some of the branches of thefamily, William Drake and his wife are the first to be identified withthe extreme Puritans who rejected the established Church of England. In the records of the Archdeacon of Colchester's Court we find thembeing fined for not attending the parish Church in 1611 and later, in1615, he was presented by the Churchwardens of Elmstead 'for notcoming orderly to Church on the Sabbath Daye' and was duly fined 12d.on 28 June 1615. Since James was supposed to have been sonof James and in fact there is a grave stone in the church at Waldenwhich reads: James Woodhall, Assistant and Treasurer, died 1539, thenJames, senior, may have been a brother of John, senior. Thus, Williamand Mary Woodhall who married would have been second cousins."
"John and Elizabeth Woodhall lived in Walden, Essex. No record oftheir deaths and no probate records for them have been found.Elizabeth, however, died before April 1583, for her uncle theArchbishop, in his will, then referred to her as deceased. He namedher son William and the five daughters, Mabel probably being thendead. If there were any other children, they had surely died earlierleaving no children. No mention is made of John Woodhall by theArchbishop so it is uncertain whether he was then dead or alive."
They had 6 children and were residents of Walden, Essex, England..
He is listed in "the following pedigree from Harleian MS., 1541, fol.55, in the British Museum" . . as "John Woodhall of Walden in Essex"["Willm Woodhall had evidently been written first, in the same ink, asthe rest of the pedigree, and John Woodhall written over this inblacker ink. - H.F.W.] married to Elizabeth, da. of Wm.
