General Notes: [Master File.ftw]

The family of Rhodri Mawr Ap Merfyn the Great Prince of Wales claimeddescent from Mailcun [MW Maelgwn Gwynedd], a contemporary of theauthor Gildas (5th or 6th century), whose exact chronology isuncertain. (The obituary of Maelgwn which appears in Annales Cambriaeis a late fabrication, so the Annales Cambriae cannot be used todeduce a date for Gildas.) However, there are suspicious features inthe early part of the pedigree (see, for example, Molly Miller, "DateGuessing and Pedigrees", in Studia Celtica 10/11[1975/6], pp. 96-109),and the part of the pedigree which can be considered reasonablycertain begins with Iago, whose death is recorded in the Irish annals. All dates given here should be regarded as approximate

1088162721972528. Flavius* Julius Constantius Emperor,2 son of Constantine* Emperor 2 and Flavia Maximiana Fausta,2 was born on 7 Aug 317 in Illyria2 and died on 3 Nov 361 in Springs of Mopsus (Mopsokrene near Tarsus)2 at age 44.

General Notes: Roman emperor (337-361), born in Illyria, 7 Aug., 317; died at theSprings of Mopsus (Mopsokrene near Tarsus), 3 Nov., 361. He was theson of Constantine the Great and his first wife Fausta. On 8 Nov.,324, he was made Cęsar. After the death of the father (337) hereceived the Provinces of Egypt, Oriens, Asia, and Pontus, and becamethe sole ruler of the Roman Empire after the death of his brothersConstantine II (340) and Constans I (350) and of Magnentius (353). Hewas not successful in his wars, in which the Persians were his chieffoe. As regards his religious policy he commanded in 353 the closingof the heathen temples and the abolishment of sacrifices under penaltyof death, but these edicts were not rigidly executed. Even lesslogical were his actions in leaving the higher schools and theinstruction of the higher classes of society in the hands of the paganphilosophers, and in continuing to fill the positions in thepriesthood in the ancient manner. Won over to Arianism by theEusebians, he acted as its protector, persecuted the orthodox Catholicbishops, and used violence against the synods. He showed especialhatred towards St. Athanasius. For a time, however, he assumed afriendly manner towards the saint, because after the murder of hisbrother Constans by the usurper Magnentius he had to exercise cautionin order to maintain his position, and he was glad to make use of theinfluence of Athanasius over the common people. But, after theoverthrow of Magnentius the emperor at once altered his conduct, andlistened willingly to the accusation of the Eusebians againstAthanasius. Pope Liberius called the Synod of Arles (353) to adjustthe matter, but Constantius terrified the bishops, so that Athanasiuswas declared guilty and deposed.

At another synod held at Milan in 355 the emperor was present behind acurtain and finally rushed into the assembly with drawn sword.Consequently this synod also passed such decrees as he desired.Whoever was not compliant was exiled or thrown into prison. PopeLiberius, however, had not confirmed these decrees, and as heresolutely refused to give his approval he was banished to Ber a inThrace; several Italian bishops, as well as Hosius of Córdova andHilary of Poitiers, were also exiled. Athanasius fled into thewilderness. From this time Constantius deposed bishops according tohis whims, and appointed in their stead others who were his tools. Hewas a mouthpiece for the most contradictory dogmas and formulę; forexample, he favoured both the Anom ans and the Semi-Arians. It is truethat at the Synod of Constantinople (360) he avoided showing himselfan open partisan of the strict Arians, but soon after, when Meletiusof Antioch was deposed, he openly accepted their confession of faith. He seemed to have clearly in mind only one aim: the destruction ofCatholic doctrine.

Hilary of Poitiers is not unjust when he describes Constantius("Contra Constantium imperatorem", P. L., X, 578 sqq.) as excessivelypresumptuous, ruthless towards God and the Church, and, althoughapparently a Christian, yet an enemy of Jesus Christ; one who drew upconfessions of faith yet who lived contrary to the faith, like an"impious person who does not know what is sacred, who drives the goodfrom the dioceses in order to give these to the wicked, who byintrigues encourages discord, who hates yet wishes to avoid suspicion, who lies but wishes no one to see it, who is outwardly friendly butwithin lacks all kindness of heart, who in reality does only what hewishes yet wishes to conceal from everyone what it is that he wishes".Constantius died of an illness while engaged in a campaign against hisnephew Julian; shortly before his death he had been baptized by theArian Bishop Euzoios.
